About Little Music Lab
Established in 2018 with the support of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music’s IgniteLAB Creativity Fund, Little Music Lab is a program for children 4 - 12 years old with a focus on learning and play through music technology.
By providing real world professional audio equipment alongside a structured program which teaches the fundamental building blocks of music, we give children a truly unique experience of just what is possible when creating with audio in a contemporary setting.
One of the hurdles that often limits children’s participation in music is the sophisticated technique required to play in the correct key and time signature. We believe that by removing these obstacles using music technology, we can give young children a unique opportunity to express themselves creatively and discover the joy of collaborating musically with others. We take influence from Indonesian Gamelan music, providing children with instruments that are in tune with one another, and cannot be made to sound dissonant. While planting the seeds for more advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of music, we provide tools which set children up for success in making music of their own that they can truly be proud of.
Patrick Telfer and Caitlyn Lesiuk created Little Music Lab and work as the primary educators in workshops and installations.
Patrick has worked in early childhood in and around Melbourne for a decade. He has worked on many creative projects recording children’s music, and as a professional musician. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Interactive Composition at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and working at Phaedra Studios.
Caitlyn delivers music programs in schools as part of The Song Room’s DUET team and runs early childhood parent and child workshops for Kiddyrock. She has studied Jazz at The Adelaide Conservatorium and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Melbourne University, with a focus on developmental psychology.
All team members involved in larger scale Little Music Lab projects are accredited musicians and educators with current Working With Children Checks.
